MTS Centre Tickets – Country Greats Head North to Winnipeg   by Brent Warnken

Most people think of Texas or the American South when they think of country. But Canada has plenty of the Great Wide Open to offer on its own-which may explain why there are just so many country fans there as well. Not surprisingly, whenever American country artists announce that they’ll be passing through town, tickets run out in a flurry. That’s sure to happen as two hot country bands-Tim McGraw and Lady Antebellum-head to north to heat things up this March. Both will be performing in Winnipeg, where the screaming crowds are sure to be thick.

Tim McGraw is undoubtedly the bigger of the two acts. McGraw is now country pop royalty, having risen to fame in the early ’90s as a principal challenger to the throne occupied by Garth Brooks. McGraw struggled for years to get noticed, finally earning recognition with the 1994 album Not a Moment Too Soon. The record provided a litany of hit tracks, from the kitschy “Indian Outlaw” to the title track, the latter of which hit number one on the country charts. A number of them landed in the Top 10, and set a precedent for the young McGraw.

McGraw’s follow-up album, I Like It, I Love It, didn’t dally on the charts: It took the express line to the number one position. That, plus his next album, Everywhere (which went multi-platinum) earned him a major slice of the listenership on country pop radio stations. Today, McGraw is seen as a mainstay who consistently wows his audiences with both spectacular showmanship onstage and moving lyrics that are imbued with the soul and essence of good, southern-fried honky-tonk country.

Lady Antebellum, on the other hand, are newcomers in a very similar vein. But the threesome-lead vocalist Charles Kelly, multi-instrumentalist Dave Haywood and lead vocalist Hilary Scott-have quickly earned their own following. The band formed in 2006 and has quickly clawed their way up the charts with hit singles like “Love Don’t Live Here.”

The chorus of the song is unforgettable: “‘Cause I’ve been doin’ fine without you / Forgettin’ all the love we once knew / And girl I ain’t the one who slammed that door / But now you say you’ve changed your thinkin’ / But I ain’t got a heart for breakin’ / So go and pick your bags up off my floor / Oh cause love don’t live here anymore.”

The band quickly rose up the charts and turned out more hits: “Lookin’ For a Good Time” and “I Run To You,” two other popular tracks from their second album, helped their self-titled debut record turn platinum. You can bet that the band will earn a lot of cheers from fans in the crowd at Winnipeg.

Of course, whether you’ll be in the crowd or not turns entirely on when you buy MTS Centre tickets. Get yours while there are still some available by heading online today.
